A Florida native, Brooke learned to swim in her grandparents’ backyard pool before she could walk. At the age of five she began swimming year-round first on the Tampa Bay Ray Swim Team, then shifting to Brandon Bluewave under her longtime swim coach Peter Banks. She burst onto the international scene in 1994 qualifying for the World Championships in the 800m freestyle, where she finished third. Brooke went on to one of the world’s greatest female distance swimmers winning three Olympic Gold Medals; 1996 Olympic 800-meter freestyle gold medal, repeated at 2000 Olympics setting an Olympic Record and won gold in the 400m freestyle.
